I think at some point in our lives we all look for a map — that shortcut to success, the direct route to everything we wanted in life.

Rocks find the map they like, discover where they are, and stop. That’s it. Surely if they find themselves on the map, then that’s all they have to do, right? Career paths are like this. It goes something like this: go to high school, graduate, go to college, graduate, take certification/licensing exam, pass, enter career field, work ’til dead/retired – whichever comes first. That’s a map. A sure path. A done deal.

It even works for some people, assuming they have other activities in their life that fulfill them.

But without that, They are a rock, stuck in the mud, weeds growing up around them, getting jealous of everyone else they see, and pretending to be happy.

Meanwhile, they are too scared to move because that might mean failure, and failure for a rock is unthinkable. It’s best to stick with the map because that’s the sure road. (“Right,” says the Rocker sarcastically.)

Wanna scare a rock? Take their map away. Show them that it doesn’t exist. Watch how they fight for it. Their map, their picture of where they are, identifies them. Worse, there is nothing but monsters beyond the edge of the map. Better not go there. You’ll fall off the world if you do.
