By no means do I mock real need. We all have moments in our lives where we need help.
However, there is also the other side of the coin: the people that choose to be homeless because they refuse to give up their addictions and jump through the hoops that would get them the help they need.
In the end, I’m not sure that giving a few dollars to a person is going to drastically make a difference, especially when they have no desire to change their lifestyle. Not when it’s too easy to just sit there and collect money from saps willing to give it. Give a man a fish and he’ll come ask you for another one tomorrow.
It’s time to think differently, to act differently.
The idea for this page was actually spurred by a blog written by Dan Miller. I do believe there is always something we can do, no matter where we’re at in life. I remember seeing one man in a wheelchair who was holding a sign that said he was a disabled vet and couldn’t work because he couldn’t walk. Okay, go to the library and use their computer to sign up for an online storage account and start writing. Certainly he has something to share with the world: his experiences, his ideas, his emotions, wondrous tales, something. Or he could paint. Or crochet. Or read stories to children. Or be a teacher’s assistant. I’m sure you can come up with your own list of ideas. The point is that there is always something you can do. No, reading stories to children is probably not going to pay the bills, at least not at first, but what if you got to a point where you could afford a microphone and could start making recordings to sell to homeschooling families? You have to start. You have to move. You have to be creative in order to better your position.
So, think about it for a moment: if you were truly in need (and maybe you are) what could you take action on to do things differently? How would you give back in exchange for what you were getting?
Today’s Rocker is sharing happiness (energy) in exchange for a quarter (and money is really nothing but energy – so this is an exchange of emotional energy for physical energy)
Here’s what I do: I inspire and encourage people to be better than they are via stories. My books, paintings, and even these comics are all structured to do that.
Now go out and rock life!
